The NFL Needs To Fix Their Priorities
I'm not a football fan. I'm most certainly not an NFL fan. My biggest exposure to the organization, short of working 1 season at Soldier Field on the security team, was the ongoing news and commentary of the situation of Colin Kaepernick, a situation that loomed much larger than simply football. Outside of that, the only time the NFL ever really enters my atmosphere is when one of their players behave badly.Oddly enough, that seems to happen a lot.Recently, I saw an opinion piece on the hiring of Kareem Hunt, with the title,
Opinion: Kareem Hunt signing shows hitting women is forgivable in NFL, but kneeling is not
This was the first time I'd heard of Kareem Hunt. I don't often pay attention to sports news. I have since watched the video of him assaulting a young lady about a year ago. This editorial does offer a thought that does deserve some discussion. While the NFL teams are establishing a history of cutting players involved in domestic violence cases, this particular case does bring the comparison into focus:
Assaulting a woman isn't ok. If you make amends for the action (let's assume that he has made amends for the action, but I haven't dug deep enough into the story or the aftermath to either confirm or deny that assumption), then we're ok with you. However, kneeling for social justice, and making that a focal point of discussion when people think of our brand is NEVER ok.
Let's keep in mind, NFL owners, coaches, and players got together to talk about kneeling during the National Anthem, and players who chose to continue to do so were threatened with fines or more. When was the last time they got together to talk about the 36 or so players who were arrested last year, some of them for a variety of violent crimes? The NFL has a problem with their priorities. I think that's plain and simple. I would love to see them straighten out those priorities. In all honesty, it wouldn't get me to watch (far too many commercials for me), but at least they would appear a little less dirtbaggy from the outside view. So, what are your thoughts on the NFL and their priorities? Should Kareem Hunt get a second chance? Let me know your thoughts and comments down below.
