April 4, 1968: The Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
When I still taught history, I made it a point to expose my students to this speech. My favorite of all his speeches, but also the most heart-wrenching of the lot in my opinion. My students would often conjecture, as do I, whether his words signaled that he knew the end was near, or whether his words galvanized his enemies to end his life ever so abruptly. It always filled me with pride when such questions would emanate from my students, and that they were able to wonder beyond the words on the page. That was the light of my job.Below you'll find two videos: The widely known and shown conclusion of the speech, and then the speech in it's entirety, which I encourage you to watch. And to quote Ms. Bernice King:
"I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we as a people will get to the Promised Land!" #MLK
We will get there.
Don't give up.
There's a more peaceful, just, humane world to build.
